簡介:
我們的大腦創造出身體與心理領域、視覺與文化地標、個人框架和案例:我們都會創造出自己「閱讀」周遭世界的系統,協助我們理解這個世界。我們透過家庭經驗、受過的教育系統,以及自身對世界的經驗看待環境。文化可以被定義為一群人之共同領域、系統、經驗,而其中的圖像即可被稱為「圖示」。
三位年輕的法國攝影師Robin Lopvet、Zoépie以及Isabelle Ha Eav在臺南國際攝影節展出主題「稍縱即逝圖像的嘆息」之作品。攝影師被「放逐」臺南和嘉義,在短時間深入探索之前沒注意過的文化。廟宇文化、歷史背景、移民浪潮、在地文化、政治變革等都不在他們原本的個人「框架」中,透過在臺灣的經驗,三位攝影師創造出各種圖像。

我認為這三組作品能讓觀眾稍微有些概念:若觀眾願意花時間坐下來、聽聽這些呈現的圖像想表達什麼,就會看到些線索。三位藝術家創造了各自稍縱即逝的圖示,嘗試記錄自己解讀已知和未知在地文化的細節,希望能在展覽期間和觀眾分享。
三位才華洋溢的藝術家透過攝影發展出各自的語言。
他們並沒有盲目跟隨固定「風格」、也沒有被攝影史帶著走:相機是經驗,是聚焦世界的方式,也是個人知識的工具。攝影師並不想「再製」、也不想「認可」,而是嘗試實驗、分享成果。當然這個知識並非機構性:個人經驗無法於學校或教育學程教授,個人經驗探索的意識領域無法供所有人閱讀,但能創造出未來圖示新形式的第一口氣息。而這也是藝術節和展覽空間存在的意義:給予觀眾時間,讓觀眾能全心面對需要全神注意才能轉譯的語言;讓觀眾花時間傾聽新興創作的氣息;也讓觀眾透過陌生方法看到自己的世界。

Introduction:
Our human brain creates physical and mental territories, visual and cultural landmarks, individual frames and cases : we all create our own system to «read» the world around us : to make it more understandable. We look at our environment with a background made out from our family heritage, the education system we went threw and our own experience of the world. Culture can be defined as commun territories, systems, experiences of a group of people and images made out of it are called « Icons ».
Robin Lopvet, Zoépie and then Isabelle Ha Eav, the three young French photographers who are exhibiting in « Breath of ephemeral icons » during the Tainan International Photography Festival, have been «dropped» in Taiwan, Tainan, Jiali. They dived during a short time in a culture they ignored before. Temple life, historical background, immigration waves, local culture, political changements…were out of there personal « frames ». And the three of them were asked to create images out of their experience here.
- How could you frame the world in that position?
- As a person, how could you take images which can create bridges between your individual culture and the world you are asked to explore?
- What will you grab from an environment that you don’t totally understand?
- What is universal and what is making Tainan so particular?
I think visiting those three exhibitions you can have a sensation of it. Some clues are appearing for those who are willing to take the time to sit and listen what the images shown here have to say. The three artist created their ephemeral icons, trying to give marks for themselves grabbing known and unknown details from local culture, with the aim to be able to share it with you during the festival.
Those three talented artists are developing their own language using photography.
They don’t try to follow a « style » and they are not lead by a legacy of photography history: they use their camera as an experience, as a way to be focused on the world, as an instrument of personal knowledge. They don’t want to «re-produce», they don’t want «recognize», they want to experiment and share the result of it. Of course this knowledge is not institutional. Those individual experiences can’t be taught in schools or educational program. They are exploring territories of consciousness which can’t be read by everybody. But they are creating new forms which maybe could be the first breath of future icons. That’s why festivals and exhibition spaces exist: giving a time to you to be faced to languages which need all your attention to be translated, for you to take the time to listen to the breath of the emerging creation. For you to see your world saw by stranger approaches.
