On locations, TAINAN - Corridor of Time Space

Exhibition Introduction

Venue: Siao-Long Cultural Park, Northern Coirrdor

Introduction:

Along the corridor, photos presented are the new creations of the curator of TiFF, Chen Po-i, as well as some of his previous works to retrospect the history of old sugar factory.

In recent years, Chen has been engaged in searching and collecting historical photos of various fields. During the process of reading and discovering historical archives, he has been contemplating the development of industries, politics, finance and economics, and human culture.

In order to revitalize those historical photos, he returned to the scenes in the photos and take new shots of present landscapes. The integration of these old and new images has presented a visual contrast easily.

Since some of the aged photos are damaged or color-fading, Chen had to repair the images before embedding them in the present scene. The contrast between the past and the present brings about the dialogues between different times. We can see the historical buildings of local government, the old public gathering spaces drawing new visitors, and the present landscapes of those popular tourist spots for schoolchildren’s field trips in the old days. The images, showing the integration of aboriginal and Han cultures, life of employees in sugar factories and of local residents, the growth and decline of industries and cities, also represent the historical evidence for transitional justice.

Every time when the photographer presses the shutter, he extracts the image from reality.  A slice of time-space cut out from the continuum can be just like jumping to the conclusion arbitrarily in a way. Nevertheless, with the creative collages of old and new images, photography has become a medium to connect different time-space and rebuild historical contexts.

In the Festival, photos and images play the roles of adhesive to join different time-space. The concept of embedding historical photos in the real scene at present time will also be employed in another event “Photography on Streets” in the Festival. The works in the Corridor of Time Space can be a preview for the future display.
