《Grandma Yang and Tainan Er Kong military dependents' villages》

As the famous poet Li Bai wrote: The universe is a temporary place for all living things. Time is the transit visitors over the span of one hundred generations. We humans are just like ants compared to the vast universe. But it’s still helpless if individual cannot determine his own destiny while being dominated by the historical tide.

In 1949, around two millions people moved and settled in Taiwan from mainland China. Their desperate and hopeless feeling subsided later and changed to a determination to take roots in their newly established homes. The Second Air-force (Er Kong) military dependents' villages are the typical examples of these stories.

There are many photographing records of these villages. Each individual story portrays a typical version of the life in the village. It is also a miniature of an era. Gramma Yang is the most familiar individual that I have contacted while photographing. Through interview and photographs, her life intertwines with Er Kong’s history. This great lost era is like an ancient clock, once toggled, all the gears inside the clock will subsequently start running and emerging with those lost persons and their stories.

I am not a resident of a military dependents' village, but I am here to narrate their stories and images. Through my strong curiosity, I intend to perceive their emotion and life and present the diversity of Taiwan culture.

The bamboo fence surrounding the villages had been torn down as time passes by. Any greater pain will submerge into the sea of time. Their blood and sweat cultivate this piece of land that continue to blossom ever after.
