陳敬寶從《片刻濃妝:檳榔西施》(Moments of Beauty: Betel Nut Girls)系列作品受到注目。《迴返計劃》(Circumgyration Project)藉被攝者的文件書寫與擺拍式攝影,探討現實、真實與記憶的微妙界域。「天上人間」(”Heaven on Earth”)系列拍攝與民宅比鄰的小廟與墳墓,以「住屋」為隱喻,將台灣描繪為神、人與亡靈共居的土地。近年來進行的「尋常人家」(”Ordinary Household”)系列,則著重於描繪當代台灣人們居家生活的樣態。他在2010年獲得日本北海道東川獎(Higashikawa Award),並於2018年參與法國亞爾國際攝影節(Arles 2018, Les Rencontres de la Photographie)會內展。

As a photographer, Chen begins to receive attention from the release of his Moments of Beauty: Betel Nut Girls series. By taking pictures of the written documents and different poses of the person being shot, Circumgyration Project is an attempt to investigate the delicate boundary between reality and memory. Heaven on Earths series focus on the little temples and cemeteries adjoining local residences; using “house” as a metaphor, Chen portrays Taiwan as a co-living land for the gods, humans, and the deceased, whereas Ordinary Household series highlight the everyday life of contemporary Taiwanese.In 2010, Chen received the Higashikawa Award in Hokkaido, Japan. In 2018, he participated in the Les Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles, France.

陳敬寶 「迴返:總爺計畫」延續「記憶徵集」與「再演出」的取徑,在台南麻豆地方以文字與圖繪的方式採集受訪者年少或年輕時的回憶。「總爺計畫」淡化訪談文件本身,讓每一件作品同時並置「當下」與「過去」兩屏影像,並藉由將記憶重現的單屏處理成黑白單色,突顯出時間的遞嬗。除了緬懷或再現己然逝去、不復重來的過往,更彷彿拓樸地摺曲出片刻閃現的純粹過去。作品本身因而變成某種召喚物,非但重現「記憶者」的回想,更成為觀者回溯自身記憶的觸媒。「總爺計畫」試圖重現在地的共同記憶:因此,對在地居民生活方式的回溯、對歷史與記憶的注目,以及對人的關照,是這個計畫最核心可能也是最具意義的部分。

Circumgyraton: Tsung-Yeh Project is a continuation of Chen’s previous projects of memory collection and re-enactment. Scaling up from school campus to a community, Chen interviews people from Tsung-Yeh about their childhood memories, he then takes photos of the interviewers’ descendants or local school kids re-enacting the memory scenes. Tsung-Yeh Project doesn’t focus on the interview documents, rather on the two images placed side by side, representing “present” and “past” in every work. Chen makes the photographs of memory re-enactment black-and-white in order to highlight the infinite passing of time. Instead of triggering reminiscence of the past, the works have become the objects that summon personal memories not only from the actual experiencers, but also from every audience as he/she looks at them.
